Design Philosophy
I had no idea where I would end up when beginning this process. One of the first steps that allowed me to move forward with a project I genuinely care about was evaluating myself. Assignment 1 asked to use both a "big picture" and interior design lens to analyze values and interests. The two ideas were then combined into a third board about my envisioned project. Women's rights is a really important topic to me. On a basic level, the woman experience is one I relate to and the many implications that ensue, from healthcare to safety. From an interior design lens, I am inspired by the versatility within space to influence physically, emotionally, and socially.
At this point, I knew I wanted the space to address a social concern, have a positive atmosphere, and be a place for growth. The next step was investigating the context of Franklinton to see how to apply my intent.
Context
Franklinton is the location for the adaptive reuse project. In order to produce a logical and thoughtful program, understanding the history, pre-existing community, and geography became essential. It was at this step I identified my target group as women breaking the cycle of prostitution, for Franklinton and surrounding areas have a significant more solicitation arrests compared to most other parts of Columbus. Additionally, unemployment is higher and women in business positions are lower.
I discovered the many assets already available to support this group. Sanctuary Night, Lower Lights, and Women's Respite Center provide food, hygiene, healthcare, and forms of support in ways of spiritual and financial assistance. She Has a Name and CATCH court are local organizations contributing to the legal needs as well as advocacy.
CLEAN Turn and Petal That Inspire are companies that guided the social motivations of forming an employment opportunity. CLEAN Turn exhibits how a company can work with individuals with barriers that typical employment tend not to support. Petal That Inspire currently employs homeless youths through floral design. This satiated my hope to develop a form of creator space, prompting me to explore the benefits of recreational therapy, that would later change to horticulture therapy
Research
My project is focused on providing employment for women exiting the life. To better inform my design for this demographic, I explored biophilic design, trauma informed design, as well horticulture/recreational therapy to ensure my decision-making would best support a safe and comforting environment. In my research, I realized there are many overlapping components including the positive health effects and connection to nature.
Franklinton and Me
Franklinton has been apart of my life the past two years and for that I am grateful. I work at a woman-owned dog daycare, AllPaws, on the corner Yale avenue and Town street. My partner grew up in Franklinton and many of his friends and family reside within the town today. I hoped to create a place that captures that experience of visitors like me being welcomed in while prioritizing an existing piece of Franklinton.
